Suspect in Providence fatal accident held

The taxi driver, who fled the scene after allegedly hitting three young men and killing one with his car on the Providence public road a month ago, has been arrested, a police source said.

On December 21, in the vicinity of the Princess Hotel at Providence, East Bank Demerara, 18-year-old Parmanand Deokaran, also known as “Rago” of Success, East Coast Demerara, died on his way to the hospital after he was struck down along with his two friends, Davendra Mangal, 20, and Kayshawn Ramnarine, 17.

The three young men had just exited the Princess International Hotel Fun City around 12:30am and were standing at the roadside when a “swaying” car crashed into them. Two of the men were tossed into a nearby trench and the driver was seen fleeing the scene.

Police had stated that they were following leads that may assist in the arrest of the alleged driver, Asif Khan. Ramnarine’s father yesterday told Stabroek News that he was glad that the man was arrested and in police custody. For one month the survivors were pleading with the driver to surrender.
