Chopped hit-and-run contractor settles with assailant, victim

Carlos Kumar, the contractor who was severely chopped by a vigilante in the presence of a police officer last month after allegedly hitting a cyclist and fleeing the scene, has reached settlements with both the person he hit and his assailant.

Kumar, 22, of Brother Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, received multiple chops, which were mainly about his upper body. The incident, according to Kumar, was never reported to the police.

Kumar told Stabroek News yesterday that a settlement was reached between him and the elderly man he had struck down. He also stated that he had reached a settlement with his assailant and that “everything just settle as that.”

“I feel alright. I’m not working right now. We mek a settlement with the man I knock down and the man who chop me, settle with me… we nah report it. The police hear we settle and them didn’t come to take any statement from me,” Kumar said.

On December 17th, 2014, Kumar had dropped home one of this staffers and was heading west on the Cornelia Ida Public Road when he struck down the elderly cyclist. Thinking the man was dead, Kumar fled the scene with the bicycle beneath the car. A group of men, after witnessing the crime, raced behind the car wielding cutlasses. Meanwhile, a police patrol that happened to be in the area at the time saw the commotion and went to investigate.

Kumar then parked the car and jumped into a nearby trench. An officer then informed the men that he will award $5,000 to the person who brought him Kumar. One of the men subsequently went into the trench and started to chop at the water. Although Kumar surrendered after he received the first chop across his face, his assailant continued to chop him in front of the police, who after several pleads from Kumar, asked the assailant to stop.

Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital and was then later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The assailant was then taken to the Leonora Police Station and was release shortly after.
