Linden woman accused of having ganja for trafficking

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Friday remanded a Linden resident charged with having a quantity of cannabis in her possession for trafficking when she appeared in court.

It is alleged that on January 15, at Old England, Linden, Carol Seon, 40, had in her possession 58 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Prosecutor Michael Grant said that on the day in question at about 3:30pm, police went to the home of Seon and a search of a fowl pen not far from her yard uncovered the illegal substance. Seon was told of the offence and responded by saying she was assisting her sister with it, Grant added.

Attorney Euclin Gomes, who represented Seon, applied for reasonable bail. He noted that the substance was found in a pen somewhere around his client’s yard, which is not fenced and is easily accessible. He also said there are a lot of other people who farm around the same area. He stated that Seon was denying the charge and is willing to abide by any condition placed on her by the court in order to be granted bail.

Grant objected to bail, saying special reasons must be provided to the court for it to be granted.

Bail was refused and the matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for January 21.
