Campbellville youth on violent robbery charge

-after over a year on the run

After being on the run for over a year, the co-accused in a violent robbery was yesterday charged with the crime and remanded to prison.

Rayan Hillman, 19, of Campbellville, George-town, is accused of robbing a man of over $200,000 in cash and other valuables. He denied the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The charge against Hillman is that on June 26, 2013, at North Sophia, he robbed Derrick Halley of a BlackBerry cell phone, a Nokia cell phone, a house key, a motorcycle key and a quantity of cash, all totalling $277,000. It is also alleged that at the same time, immediately before or after, he used personal violence to Halley.

The other man charged with the crime, Wesley Griffith, is now serving a 60-month long jail sentence after he was found guilty last year.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence, the penalty attached and the fact that personal violence was used in the commission of the crime. He also noted that Hillman has been in hiding for over a year, while expressing doubt that he would return for trial if released on bail.

As a result, the court upheld the prosecutor’s objections and Hillman was remanded to prison until February 9 for the filing of statements.
