Employees agree to repay boss over $900,000 lumber theft

Although they denied stealing $900,000 in lumber from their employer, two men yesterday struck a deal to repay him in order to avoid jail.

Benjamin Sookhoo, 27, of Sarah Johanna, and Ramraj Persaud, 27, of 83 C Plantation Hope, found themselves before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Georgetown after they were accused of stealing a quantity of Greenheart wood, valued at $900,000, from Bharat Nandlall.

The alleged theft occurred between December 5 and December 7, 2014.

Prosecutor Michael Grant did not object to bail because Nandlall had agreed to be compensated. Both accused paid Nandlall $100,000 in court.

After the magistrate demanded to know when the rest of the money would be paid, the men told her within the next two months. As a result, bail was set at $100,000 and the case was adjourned until February 6.
