A Sophia mechanic was on Monday granted a total of $800,000 bail after he denied eight separate counts of fraudulent conversion which were read to him in a city court.
The charges stated that between November 1 and November 13, 2014, being solely entrusted with eight different motor vehicles belonging to Mohamed Ali, Ramchan Mohara, 32, of Lot 1477 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, fraudulently converted them to his own use and benefit.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
Mohara was allegedly entrusted with the vehicles to service and repair them.
Attorney Peter Hugh applied for reasonable bail to be granted after telling the court his client is not a flight risk.
Prosecutor Michael Grant had no objections to bail but asked for conditions to be attached. When asked by the magistrate why the matter was only being called on Monday, Grant said advice was only sought from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 19.
Mohara was granted $100,000 bail for each count. In addition, the court ordered that he report to the officer-in-charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Friday starting from February 6.
Mohara is expected to make his next court ap-pearance on February 13.
