Clonbrook man shot after refusing to hand chains to bandits

A 28-year-old Clonbrook resident was shot once to his left side around midnight on Sunday after six men attempted to rob him at Ann’s Grove Car Park, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Otis Wickham told Stabroek News yesterday that he was standing on the road with a close friend on Sunday night when he noticed a boy passing frequently and told his friend about it.

Some time after, “me and me friend gaffing and I just see three bike with six men come up to we. One of them jump off the bike and rush to me saying pass the two gold chain right away but I tell he, no I ain’t giving.”

Wickham said after he refused to hand over his jewellery one of the men gun butted him once to his head and as he tried to run away he was also shot once. He added that after he was shot he continued running and jumped into a nearby trench.

“I went in there all the time watching them and they ain’t moving… they even see I jump in there but them man did well dress so they ain’t want jump,” the injured man said.

They subsequently left the same way they had arrived.

Wickham recalled from his hospital bed that although the men were not masked he was unable to identify any of them. “All I could remember… is that they were young guys and only the one that attack me had a gun, a silver one,” he said.

He added that the police visited him during yesterday and he was told no one had been arrested as yet. “If I did give them the chains they wouldn’t [have shot] me but I say nah me ain’t giving,” Wickham said.

He remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The bullet had not yet been removed.
