Skeldon estate manager charged with assaulting cop

Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Skeldon Estate manager Dave Kumar was on Thursday slapped with charges of riotous behavior and assaulting a peace officer with intent to avoid arrest.

Kumar appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Godfrey Playter had no objections to bail and Kumar’s attorneys, Ramesh Rajkumar Krisendat Persaud and Chandra Sohan, requested that it be set at a reasonable sum. However, he was released on a bond.

According to the prosecution, on Friday December 12, 2014 around 9:30 PM lawmen who were carrying out a routine patrol in the Skeldon community stopped the estate manager, who was highly intoxicated and he verbally abuse the officers.

Although he was cautioned a few times, he reportedly continued abusing the officers with degrading and explicit terms as he was asked to turn on the lights of a company vehicle.

It was also alleged that Kumar was caught urinating in the middle of the road by a passing police patrol and when his actions were questioned, he reportedly threatened to urinate on the men. He was arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station.

He was initially charged on February 12, but failed to make an appearance at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. On February 19, the case was recalled but he once again did not appear. He is scheduled to make another appearance in court on April 16.
