Conductor held with ganja gets fine, community service

A bus conductor was yesterday fined $3,000 and also ordered to perform six months of community service after he admitted to having a small quantity of cannabis in his possession.

The charge against Shemroy Victor, of Lot 241 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown read that on March 5 he had in his possession 1.5 grammes of cannabis.

The unrepresented Victor pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

“I does wuk bus and on my way home I had it [the cannabis] in me pocket and the police them see me and hold on pun me,” he told the court.

The magistrate subsequently fined Victor $3,000 and also ordered him to report to the officer-in-charge of the East La Penitence Police Station every Monday for the next six months commencing from March 16.
