Haitian man fined for entering Guyana illegally

A Haitian national was yesterday fined $30,000 after admitting to entering Guyana illegally.

Through an interpreter, Jonathan Joseph pleaded guilty to the charge when     it was read to him by     Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

The charge stated that between March 6 and March 9, 2015, at Lethem, Joseph entered Guyana by land and failed to present himself to the nearest immigration officer.

If Joseph fails to pay the fine, he will be faced with a one-month prison term.
