Taxi driver charged with stealing over $2M in armed hold-up

A taxi driver was refused bail yesterday after he was accused of robbing a couple of over $2 million at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara,

It is alleged that on December 23, 2014, Alistair Naughton, being armed with dangerous weapon, robbed Hemchand Narine and Dianne Ramroop, as they were heading home from the bank.

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, in Georgetown, yesterday heard that Naughton stole a Luger revolver and six rounds of ammunition, valued at $203,000, belonging to Narine. In addition, it was also alleged that, on the same day, being armed with a dangerous weapon, he robbed Ramroop of $2,000,000, also property of Narine.

The East La Penitence resident pleaded not guilty to the charges and opted to say he was wrongly implicated in the crime. The prosecution objected to bail, based on the possibility that the man would not return to court for trial, the seriousness of the offence and the penalty for which the offence attracts.

Naughton was subsequently remanded and the matter has been transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for Friday.
