Bus driver, housewife on ganja trafficking charge

A minibus driver and a housewife, who were allegedly found with over 300 grammes of cannabis in their possession, were yesterday remanded to prison.

The charge against Edmond Prescott, 59, of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, and Dawn Barclay, 39, of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, stated that on April 20, at Lot 214 Freeman Street, they had 300 grammes of cannabis in their possession for trafficking. In addition, Prescott was also charged with having 21 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the same purpose.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 3.

Attorney Adrian Thompson represented the couple and requested reasonable bail. His clients, he noted, had no previous convictions nor any pending matters. Thompson told the court that Prescott and Barclay are charged jointly and argued that it is a clear indication that the police don’t know who exactly had the illegal substance in their possession since it was found on neither person.

But Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick objected to bail on the grounds that no special reasons were provided to the court. Bostwick also pointed out during the hearing that Barclay provided the police with information which led them to search Prescott’s apartment, where the larger amount of cannabis was discovered.

The couple was refused bail and the case was adjourned until May 7, when the trial is expected to begin.
