Civil Defence Commission awards essay and poster winners

The Civil Defence Com-mission (CDC) on Wednesday hosted winners of its National Essay and Poster competition for students.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, the CDC’s essay and poster competition was a National Public Education Campaign (NPEC) initiative launched in February 2014 to raise public awareness of the population’s role in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Under the theme “Guyana Our Country, Our Responsibility”, the competition had a total of 15 winners, six of whom were awarded for posters and the remaining nine were for their essay writing. The primary school category had a total of six winners, three for their posters and the remaining three were awarded for essay writing. Six awards were allotted to those submitted under the secondary schools category, three for posters and three for their essays. The remaining three awards were for the essays written in the tertiary category.

For the poster competition, the first place prize of a touch screen computer went to Oma Devi Seodat of Leonora Primary. A tablet and a $40,000 Austin’s bookstore voucher was awarded to the second and third place winners, Rofiya Williams and Alliya Alves who are from South Ruimveldt Primary and Providence Primary respectively.

Ntini Augustus of Bush Lot Secondary took the first prize of a laptop computer for his poster submission, Vaniesha Ramsaywack of St Joseph’s Secondary received a tablet and a $10,000 Austin’s bookstore voucher for the second prize and, a memo pad along with a $20,000 Austin’s bookstore voucher was awarded to Thia Tappin of Bush Lot Secondary for third place.

Among the tertiary level entrants for the essay competition, Reshauna Thomas was placed first with Winston Junior George in second place and Satwanti Baburam receiving the third place. Thomas and George both received computers while Baburam was awarded a $10,000 Austin’s bookstore voucher and a tablet.

Kenny Roberts from Bartica Secondary took the first place in the essay writing and received a computer for his efforts. A computer was also given to the second place winner Vanessa Ramnarine and a Mahdia Secondary School student, Gregory Thorington received the third place prize of a tablet and a $10,000 Austin’s Bookstore voucher.

In the primary school category of essay writers Chelbie Gilkes of No. 29 Primary placed first, Delecia Dorris of Sheet Anchor, second and Coomacka student Crissyana Collins third. Gilkes received a computer, while Dorris was gifted a tablet and a $10,000 Austin’s bookstore voucher and Collins received a tablet.

The ceremony’s keynote address was given by Dr Roger Luncheon and Director of the National Centre for Education Development (NCERD) Jennifer Cumberbatch was also present.
