A man was yesterday charged with preying on a pensioner, whose bag he allegedly snatched in an unsuccessful robbery.

Travis Hunt denied the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

The charge stated that on May 1, Hunt robbed Sookwantie Mangar of her handbag and other articles.

The court heard that Mangar was walking along South Road when Hunt rode up on a bicycle and snatched her bag. Apart from the bag, which was valued $3,000, Hunt allegedly took the woman’s cell phone, valued $5,000, and $1,000 cash.

However, before he could have escaped, Hunt was apprehended with the stolen articles in his possession.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, but bail was set at $50,000 bail. The case will be called again on May 19.
