Woman, 63, on ganja trafficking charge

A 63-year-old woman, who police say admitted to buying marijuana for resale in order to make a living, was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge.

Patsy Baptiste pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared in a city court, which heard that she had 16 grammes of cannabis for trafficking in her possession on April 30.

Police say ranks, acting on information obtained, conducted a search at the woman’s Diamond Housing Scheme residence, where the cannabis was reported to have been discovered in a cap in her bedroom.

The court also heard that when the cannabis was shown to Baptiste, she allegedly admitted that it was hers and told the ranks that she purchased the drug to sell in order to make a living.

The woman was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes, who made a petition for bail, while saying the cannabis was found in a house that Baptiste shares with her children. Hughes also said the woman has a disability and therefore she poses no flight risk.

However, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered that the woman be remanded to prison and the case was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for a hearing tomorrow.
