Man jailed over ganja trafficking after trial

A man was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment after he was found guilty of possession of cannabis for trafficking.

Travis Sobers, 29, was found guilty of having 10 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. The offence occurred on November 29, 2014. He had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment before Magistrate Ann McLennan on December 3, last year and was placed on $70,000 bail.

Sobers was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson throughout the proceedings.

Thompson had previously told the court during his bail application that the cannabis was found in a taxi and three persons were in it, one of whom was held and the other granted bail.

He had also added that the cannabis was found in a bag and Sobers was not the only one who had access to it.

Sobers was tried before Magistrate Judy Latchman and the matter was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick.

When asked if he wanted to say anything after being told he was found guilty, Peters said in a soft tone of voice, “My Worship, my mother has been with me throughout this matter and I am asking for leniency since the haversack where the cannabis was found is not mine.”

Having considered all the evidence given and the need for a deterrent, the magistrate sentenced him to the next three years in prison. In addition, he was fined $30,000.
