Truck driver granted $250,000 bail over illegal fuel charge

A truck driver was yesterday placed on $250,000 bail after he appeared in a city court and denied having illegal fuel. It is alleged on September 18, 2014, at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, Feroze Hamid, 45, had stored a quantity of diesel, which did not contain the fuel marker used by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) as specified.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 5.

The facts of the matter are that on the day in question, officers from the GEA went to the location where they saw the diesel in 9 five-gallon bottles. Samples were taken and analyzed, which showed that the diesel did not have the GEA marking.

Hamid’s attorney asked for bail to be granted in reasonable sum.

He is expected to make his next court appearance today before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
