Woman jailed for four years over forged cheques, multi-million $$ theft

A woman who admitted that she forged cheques and stole millions was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the offences on Friday but she will only serve four years as the sentences will run concurrently.

Jasodhra Bahadur, 37, of 18 Block CC Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court and pleaded guilty to the charges.

She is accused of forging cheques intended for her employer where she stole nearly $600,000 and was sentenced to four years for this offence. She had worked as a sales representative for New Horizon Inc.

Bahadur was sentenced to a further three years in jail after she admitted to 26 charges of simple larceny which amounted to $11 million.

The mother of one was slapped with another three-year jail term after she admitted to 32 other charges involving millions in cash.

The sentences will run concurrently meaning that she will only serve four years.

The Chief Magistrate in handing down the sentences said that she took into consideration the fact that Bahadur pleaded guilty and did not waste the court’s time in conducting a trial.

Bahadur appeared very poised in court as she stood in the prisoners’ dock and calmly apologized for the wrongdoing.

The woman who was previously represented by attorney Latchmie Rahamat, was unrepresented at Friday’s hearing.
