Strangled Mahaica senior may have known killer/s, daughter says

A post-mortem examination performed on the body of Chandroutie Persaud, who was found bound and gagged in her bed at her River View Squatting Area, Mahaica home on Saturday revealed that she died as a result of suffocation and strangulation.

Stabroek News had previously reported that Persaud, 68, called ‘Aunty’ was discovered dead around 5.30 am on Saturday by her husband who lived with her but occupied a separate room. The man was questioned by police but later released. The couple ran a small shop, which is located in front of the house and the killing appeared to have stemmed from a robbery since items were missing from the shop and house along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Yogeeta Persaud, daughter of the dead woman, yesterday told this newspaper that her mother’s death appeared to be a well-planned one. She told this newspaper that her father would normally wake up around midnight every night to check on her but forsome reason he didn’t on Saturday night. She also said that when her father, woke up on Saturday morning he noticed the door of his wife’s room open and the bottles in which she kept her money emptied and scattered on the ground. This prompted him to call her and inform her of what he had noticed after which she rushed to the house and discovered her mother lying motionless on her bed with cloth stuffed in her mouth and her neck tied.

The distraught daughter expressed the view that her mother was murdered by persons well known to her. She said her mother might have been killed because she saw the persons who entered and robbed her.

Meanwhile, the two men who were held by police to assist with investigations were released on Tuesday.

Persaud will be laid to rest today and family members have vowed to find her killer/s to ensure they face the consequences.
