Miner jailed for five years over drug trafficking

Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday handed down a five-year prison sentence to a miner after finding him guilty on two counts drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Oswald Moses had made his initial court appearance before the magistrate in March of this year where he was remanded on the charges.

In the first charge, Moses reportedly had in his possession 15 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. It was further alleged that he also had in possession 235 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The miner had pleaded not guilty to both counts of drug possession. However, he was yesterday found guilty and consequently ordered to serve 2 years 9 months on each charge. The sentences are expected to run concurrently.

In addition to the prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay a fine of $45,000 for the possession of the cocaine as well as an additional $317,350 for the possession of cannabis.
