Former person of interest Manu Durant dies after strip club shooting

Manu Durant, known previously as a suspect in the disappearance of Buxto-nian Tenisha Morgan, was fatally shot early yesterday morning in front of the Baroombar strip club at North Road, Georgetown.

The police said in a statement that Durant, 40, of Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara, was involved in an argument with another man around 4:30AM, during which he was shot to his chest. Durant was later pronounced dead at a private hospital, where he was rushed for treatment.

The suspect is still on the run, police added.

According to a witness, Durant, who was drunk, got irate when the DJ at the club turned off the music while the strippers were dancing for him.

“Like he get vex and pull out he gun and point it to the DJ head and say ‘turn on de (expletive) music, I wan’ hear two mo song,’” the source said.

The witness added that the DJ turned back on the music but stopped it before the songs were completed.

After the music was turned off once more, Durant reportedly got angry and threatened to kill the DJ, the witness said.

Three gunshots were fired and the source said he thought it was Durant that fired the shots but it was the security guard.

Durant was rushed to Dr Balwant Singh’s Hospital in an unconscious state.

He did not regain consciousness before he succumbed to his wounds.

According to sources, Durant was a regular customer at the strip club and he was able to enter with his firearm. Stabroek News was unable to find out if Durant was the holder of a firearm licence.

When Stabroek News visited Baroombar, the building was closed and no official was available for comment.

Durant was a suspect in the disappearance of Morgan, the girlfriend of the notorious criminal Rondell Rawlins, known as ‘Fineman.’ Morgan’s disappearance in 2008 had sparked widespread anxiety after it was alleged that the Lusignan massacre, in which 11 persons were killed, was carried out to force her return to her family.

Durant was wanted in connection with Morgan’s disappearance but he was freed after a police investigation.

Durant had also been shot in 2009 outside of a bar in Kitty.
