UG students, lecturers for studies at Russian Friendship University

The University of Guyana (UG) yesterday signed an agreement with the People’s Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) that will assist in giving local students and lecturers opportunities to enhance their skills and further their studies.

UG Vice-Chancellor Jacob Opadeyi praised the delegates from the PFUR for visiting and bearing good tidings of an agreement that he thinks will assist in “transforming the university to the way we want to.”

Opadeyi explained that the agreement will cover several areas that will assist in upgrading the skills of the students and teachers at UG.

The agreement will offer programmes for both teaching and research purposes, exchange students, and attachment or internships.

Opadeyi further explained that the main focus of the agreement will be sending lecturers to complete their PhD studies in Russia.

While the lecturers who are pursuing the PhD programmes will have to spend a year learning Russian, he noted that some courses at PFUR are taught in English, which will be beneficial to students on one-year programmes.

The agreement will focus on the agricultural, science, and mathematical departments.

“This morning we were in Berbice and we were looking at areas to facilitate business between Russian and Guyanese Businessmen,” he further said as he explained that he hopes that the agreement will benefit the country in a whole.

Speaking through a translator, PFUR First Vice-Rector, Professor Evgeny L. Shchesnyak, expressed his gratitude and excitement about the signing of the agreement.
