Pilot denies causing teen cyclist’s death

-released on $900,000 bail

A pilot was placed on $900,000 bail yesterday after he denied causing the death of a teenager by dangerous driving.

Randy Liverpool, 29, of Lot 44 Norton Street, Lodge, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on May 26th, at Brickdam and Old College Road, Liverpool drove motor jeep PPP 1203 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Verdon Wilson.

The police’s case is that on the night of the accident, at about 7:15PM, the accused collided with 17-year-old pedal cyclists Ryan Massiah and Verdon Wilson.

As a result, both Massiah and Wilson sustained injuries.

According to police, they were picked up by Liverpool, with assistance from public-spirited citizens, and taken to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where Wilson was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit in an unconscious state. He had sustained a fractured skull as a result of the accident and died on June 1st.

The prosecutor objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence, the punishment it attracts and the fact that a life was lost.

Attorney Euclin Gomes made an application for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum. Gomes pleaded with the court to grant bail to his client, while noting that he had no prior brushes with the law and is well known to his community and the aviation sector. He also said that if bail is granted, Liverpool will be able to return to work.

As a result, Liverpool was granted bail on the condition that his driver’s license is suspended, he lodges his passport and also does not leave the jurisdiction until the completion of his trial. He was also ordered to report to the officer in charge of the Alberytown Police Station every Friday at 8:30AM.
