Ex-con robbed Fly Jamaica workers of over $5M during hold-up – court hears

An ex-convict yesterday found himself once more before a court, where he was accused of robbing two Fly Jamaica employees of over $5 million.

The allegation against Kurt Kendall, of Lot 474 Section ‘B’ Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara, is that on May 29, at Thomas Lands, Georgetown, he robbed Elizabeth Seepaul of $1,240,000, which was property of Wings Aviation and also $2,500,000, which was property of Fly Jamaica.

It is also alleged that on the same day, Kendall robbed Christopher Halley of US$8,264, equivalent to $1,600,000 and which was also property of Fly Jamaica.

Kendall pleaded not guilty to both counts of armed robbery when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 1 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who read the charges.

Presenting the police’s case, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that Seepaul and Halley, who are employed with Fly Jamaica, had boarded a company bus and went to conduct business in Georgetown. He said while they were in the vicinity of Queen’s College, they were intercepted by a car, which forced the bus to stop.

Mangru said the accused and two others came out of the car, armed with gun, and robbed the two workers of the cash mentioned in the charges.

Mangru also told the court that Kendall was subsequently arrested and he was placed on an ID parade, where he was positively identified by the two victims.

The prosecutor objected to bail, while citing the seriousness of the offences, the penalty they attract and the fact that a firearm was used to commit the crimes.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat represented Kendall and he maintained that his client was never present where the robbery occurred.

During the proceedings, the court heard that Kendall was charged and convicted for armed robbery before and he had served a three-year prison sentence.

Bail was subsequently refused and the case was adjourned until June 22.
