Taxi driver accused of armed robberies

A taxi driver was remanded to prison on Monday after being accused of committing two armed robberies.

Dennis Rampersaud, 34, of Lot 185 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the two counts of armed robbery when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2.

It is alleged that on April 21st, at Regent Street, Georgetown, being armed with a gun, Rampersaud robbed King Roberts of $20,000 in cash. It is also alleged that on June 2nd, at Camp Street, Georgetown, being armed with a knife, he robbed Kenesha Soso of a cellphone and a quantity of cash, amounting to $145,000.

Attorney James Bond made an application for bail to be granted to Rampersaud, who he said is a childhood friend. Bond told the court that Rampersaud is the sole breadwinner for his family and he came from a military background. He also said the man is innocent of the charges.

Rampersaud was said to be a taxi driver for the past 10 years.

No facts were presented but Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail and noted that in both instances ID parades were carried out and Rampersaud was positively identified. He also objected to bail due to the fact that personal violence was used in the commission of the crimes.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Rampersaud be remanded to prison until June 23rd, when the next hearing is scheduled.
