Three charged over firearm, ammo after police operation on West Dem

Three men who were apprehended, one of whom was shot in a police operation around 8:20 pm at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara on June 3, have been remanded to prison.

Nabil Yusuf, Guy Belgrave and Atiba Gardener were charged with possession of a .32 revolver and five matching rounds of ammunition.

Corporal Richard Harris objected to bail and they were remanded to prison until July 1. Gardener had been shot in his eye during the confrontation with police. He was admitted under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Yusuf and Belgrave appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool on Monday and Gardener, 39, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, faced charges yesterday at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court after being discharged from hospital.

Police had also intercepted a motorcar, PSS 1304 that the men were in. Gardener who was said to be sitting on the left side back seat allegedly opened the door and pointed the gun at the cops and tried to escape. It was at this stage he was shot.
