Port Kaituma hit by flooding

Flooding has caused major damage to the Port Kaituma Main Road, Region One and water has also seeped into the homes of residents, a businessman from the area said yesterday.

The businessman said it was the first time Port Kaituma was so severely flooded. When the road was flooded, it was difficult for children to go to school. He said this road also leads to the Kaituma Airstrip.

The businessman said he believes the flooding was caused because of miners in the area. He said the miners would usually build dams to conserve water during the dry season. When rain started to fall several days ago, dams collapsed, and the sluices where the water would drain into overflowed. As a result, the water rushed onto the main road and into the low-lying communities in the area.

The businessman said a lot of mud was left behind as a result of the flooding.
