GECOM canvassing for local gov’t elections workers

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is inviting persons who have been trained in electoral processes to indicate whether they are available to attend further training as it relates to Local Government elections.

In an ad in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek, GECOM said that it is moving towards preparations relative to the conduct of Local Government Elections. “In this regard, the agency is seeking to ascertain from those persons who are in the reservoir of trained electoral personnel; particularly those who would have worked at the 2015 General and Regional elections, their availability/ willingness to attend further training relative to the conduct of Local Government Elections,” the ad said.

The APNU+AFC government has promised that within its first 100 days in office, it would name a date for the long-delayed local government elections. Local government elections have not been held since 1994 and despite many local and international calls, the previous Donald Ramotar administration did not hold the polls.

Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan told Stabroek News recently that the new administration is looking to hold the long-awaited polls by the end of the year.

The GECOM notice said that letters and acceptance forms have been prepared and are in the process of being distributed to GECOM’s Registration Offices countrywide to those persons listed in the reservoir.

The ad said that the persons are required to complete the acceptance forms which must be placed in the boxes located at the respective Registration Offices no later than 6pm on June 25.
