Seven homeless after Alberttown fire

Seven people are now homeless after fire razed an Alberttown home on Sunday morning.

A neighbour said that Yaniv Khan and Rafeek Khan were forced to break through her fence at 2 am in an effort to escape the fire that consumed their Lot 122 Fourth Street home.

“I hear a boom and then in couple minutes the whole house went up in fire,” the neighbour told Stabroek News. She said the two boys who were at home, forced their way into her yard to escape the heat.

While the woman expressed her joy that no one was injured during the fire, she blasted the response of the fire service. “It was more than one and we went hay yelling fire! Fire! Fire! And no one ain’t answering we or responding,” the woman stated, pointing out that the fire station is next door. The woman explained that it took the fire service some 20 minutes to arrive. She said that if the fire service had responded earlier the house could’ve been saved.

While no one is injured, Shazad Khan and Zilla Khan, the owners of the home and their 13-year-old son, who were in Bartica at the time of the incident, along with Yaniv Khan, Rafeek Khan, Reno Thomas, and Trevor Hohenkirk are left homeless.

Stabroek News understands that the family has returned to Bartica the investigations are currently ongoing to ascertain the origin of the fire.
