Decomposing bodies of woman, baby found in Grove apartment

Shock rippled through the Golden Grove community yesterday after the decomposing bodies of a mother and her infant daughter were found in their home on Friday night and police were up to late yesterday trying to make contact with her husband.

Dead are Eulanca Charles of 408 Block Y, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara and her two-month-old daughter.

Neighbours said Charles was not sociable, nevertheless some of them had noticed her absence and had wondered at it.

The house where Charles lived is divided into two apartments. She, her husband and her two-month-old daughter lived in one, while a man and his girlfriend, lived in the other. The two apartments are separated by a wall.

The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, explained to this publication that they started to notice a pungent odour coming through the windows since last week Friday. The man explained that after the odour became unbearable, he contacted the police.

The police arrived at the home around 11.30 on Friday night and after breaking down the door, discovered the decomposing bodies of Charles and her daughter on the ground in the bedroom.

Two fruit vendors, who said that Charles had frequently purchased fruits from them, explained that they had not seen her for about two weeks but didn’t pay any attention to it as they assumed that she had gone into the interior with her husband, who works there. The vendors explained that Charles would usually call them to deliver items to her house but that she had not contacted them in a while.

“I remember one day she call me and tell me that she at the police station fuh he [the husband],” one of the vendors stated, explaining that Charles was having “serious domestic problems” with her husband. She said that the man had a drinking problem and about a month ago, Charles was forced to make a report to the police.

While some of the neighbours and people who knew Charles speculated that foul play was involved, they stated that they had not seen the husband in almost three weeks.

Contacted, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said it was too early to ascertain the causes of death of Charles and the baby, given the condition they were discovered in. He said the police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examinations.

The investigations are still ongoing as the police are trying to make contact with the husband.
