Fake ATM cards, illicit gun found in home of drug accused

Police yesterday found two more illegal weapons and a large quantity of fake ATM cards during two search exercises, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum yesterday revealed.

The first exercise was done around 6 am at a house located at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and resulted in the arrest of four persons including a woman who is before the court for attempting to smuggle 20 kilos of cocaine out of Guyana.

At the time of her arrest she was heavily pregnant and was in the VIP section of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

Contacted, Blanhum told Stabroek News that police acting on intelligence swooped down on the house and found four occupants including the woman.

A search of the building he said unearthed an unlicensed weapon and two magazines containing live rounds. The calibre of weapon was not immediately available but according to Blanhum ballistic testing was still being done.

He said too that ranks found 120 ATM cards. He revealed that the cards were black except for a magnetic strip.

He said that the cards had no markings or numbers on them.

At the moment investigators are trying to ascertain the origin of the cards and what they were going to be used for.

Blanhum told this newspaper that police are currently seeking a fifth person to assist them in their investigations.

A second gun was recovered at Sherima Crossing, Essequibo River around 9:30 am. According to Blanhum, police found a 9 mm pistol and 12 live rounds in possession of a man who has since been detained.

The unlicensed weapon was found in a vehicle that the man was travelling in.

Meanwhile, the owner of a Riverview, Ruimveldt home who jumped into the Demerara River moments before police searched his home and found a gun, has turned himself in to police, Blanhum said. He said that the man was arrested on Tuesday.

Ranks had gone to his home around 6 am on Monday acting on information.

On seeing the cops, Blanhum had said, the man ran out of the house and jumped into the river. A search was subsequently conducted on the house and a .32 pistol and 20 rounds of ammunition were unearthed.

The man who goes by the alias ‘Grey Boy’ had been charged several times with armed robbery and in 2012 had survived a murder attempt.
