Trial of cops accused of Colwyn Harding assault adjourned due to prosecutor’s absence

The trial of two police constables, accused of assaulting Colwyn Harding, was adjourned last week due to the absence of Prosecutor Nigel Hughes.

Police Constables Devin Singh and Rosel Tilbury-Douglas are currently on trial at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

While both defendants, their lawyers and Harding were present at the court last Friday for the continuation of the trial, the matter had to be stood down twice by Magistrate Leron Daly after the prosecutor was absent. When it was called for a third time, attorney Leslie Sobers, who is representing Tilbury-Douglas, stood up and addressed the court, stating that the prosecution’s lateness has become “a burden when one has to wait in ignorance.”

Singh’s attorney Glenn Hanoman made an application to the court to have the matter dismissed in the absence of the prosecution, but this was dismissed by Magistrate Daly. The matter was then adjourned to July 24th.

Singh and Tilbury-Douglas are jointly charged with assaulting Harding between November 1 and November 13, 2013, at the Timehri Police Station. Singh had an additional assault charge laid against him.

Harding had accused a police constable of ramming a condom-covered baton up his anus and later physically assaulting him last November.
