Albouystown residents swamped again

Just days after Albouystown residents were experienced some relief from flooding, the community was waterlogged again up to late yesterday after a heavy downpour and owing to problems with the Sussex Street koker.

Residents late last evening expressed their dissatisfaction and frustration over the entire issue and are calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter as soon as possible since it has been an ongoing one that they experience.

Speaking to Stabroek News, Tia Williams, a resident of Hunter Street, Albouystown said that she resides in a one bedroom apartment with her baby and it was flooded. This, according to woman, has cost her a lot that she can’t even afford to replace; many of her belongings are damaged. However, a major concern now, Williams said, is that she fears her child will fall sick since the water has a very bad stench. What is even more stressful for her is that she has nowhere to go for respite.

Another resident, who operates a shop in James Street, Albouystown while she resides in Albouys Street said that the flooding is a regular issue that she faces since she has been living in the village for the past years.

She said that since Wednesday she has been unable to open her shop which is her means of livelihood and has also suffered major losses which included her freezer and other items at her shop. Apart from that many items at her home are also water damaged. The flooding, according to her, was caused by the recent intense downpour. The water won’t recede easily the woman said, because apart from the problems at the koker there is also poor drainage.

In addition when contacted another resident, said that he was forced to remove from his premises since the flooding but was informed that the water level has now risen compared to when he had left. For a period, the man stated, the water had started to recede but suddenly has risen.
