Region Three youths begin training under police-led initiative

Sixty-seven youths from Region Three have been enrolled in a six-week technical and vocational training programme planned by the Commander of ‘D’ Division in collaboration with the Government Technical Institute as a means of tackling crime.

On Monday, the new students commenced various areas of study being offered at the Leonora Technical Vocational Training Centre.

Commander Stephen Mansell, who was present on the first day, urged the youths to be focused, disciplined and punctual to ensure their success.

As part of the programme students will be exposed to Office Administration, Data Operations, Motor Mechanics, Plumbing, Carpentry, Welding and Electrical Installation.

Classes are being held from Monday through Wednesday, from 9AM to 12PM.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be presented with certificates, which will qualify them to pursue a diploma programme at the institution.

Mansell had previously said the initiative was birthed after he observed the many youngsters who would be idling on the street corners. It is also a strategy used to fight crime and offer empowerment to the youth in the region. “We are basically teaching them to fish for a lifetime,” he said.
