Minibus driver remanded over New Market St fatal accident

A minibus driver was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly driving a minibus recklessly and causing the death of a man.

Orlando King of Lot 26 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, was charged with driving minibus BSS 4305 in a reckless and dangerous manner on July 16, thereby causing the death of Wilbert Anthony.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that King was driving at a fast rate at Camp and New Market streets when he lost control of the minibus and hit Anthony, causing him to pitch several feet. Jones said the defendant continued speeding down the road before he came to a halt.

Jones objected to bail due to the gravity of the matter and said that the deceased was pitched 68 feet after impact. He then highlighted that the driver came to a halt approximately 96 feet away from the accident scene.

King was represented by Attorney Glen Hanoman who in his client’s defence stated that Andrews had suddenly walked into the path of the minibus. Hanoman also said that a statement given by one of the passengers corresponds with his claim.

The defendant was remanded to prison and is due to make his next court appearance on August 10.
