No bail for accused in $3.4M jewellery theft

Two men were on Thursday remanded to jail after being charged with stealing $3.4 million in gold jewellery from another man.

Jamal Jacobs, an electrician, and Travis Fernandes, a porter, were jointly charged with stealing two gold chains, valued $1.8 million, and eight gold rings, valued $1.6 million, from Christopher Da Silva at Albouystown on August 7th.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them by Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones objected to bail, citing the gravity of the offence as well as the value of the articles stolen.

Additionally, Jones noted that the stolen jewellery was not recovered.

As a result, both men were refused bail and the matter was adjourned until August 20th.
