Narinesammy, 26, of 130 Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice was charged with armed robbery and discharging a loaded firearm with intent to cause injury when he appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s Court. According to the charges, Narinesammy, a mason, while in the company of others armed with guns and cutlasses, robbed Indranie Takean, 46, of $100,000 on August 5th, at her Number 48 Village home. He is also accused of discharging live rounds at police with intent to cause injury. After the indictable charges were read to him, the unrepresented Narinesammy was not required to enter pleas. He is expected to return to court on August 26th when the matters will be called again.

At around 1.30am, a gang of gun-toting bandits carried out the attack on rice farmer Tagraj Tulshi and his family, including Takean, who is his wife. The men climbed onto a shed at the back of the house and cut a hole in the wall with a chainsaw and entered.

The bandits doused Takean with kerosene oil and threatened to light her on fire if she did not comply and hand over valuables. However, bandits learned that police were approaching and they aborted the attack. Police had said a police mobile patrol responded to a report and on approaching the scene came under fire. The ranks returned fire but the perpetrators managed to escape into the Number 48 Village backlands.
