Labourer jailed for six months over theft

A man was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday after admitting to stealing a chainsaw bar.

Rajendra Sukhai pleaded guilty with explanation yesterday at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

While the charge initially stated that he stole a chainsaw, Sukhai opted to correct the court. “Ma’am, I didn’t steal no chainsaw, it was a chainsaw bar,” he told magistrate Leron Daly.

The charge was then reread to him. It stated that he stole a chainsaw bar, valued $8,000, from his employer.

When given the opportunity to explain himself, Sukhai, a labourer, explained that he was paid $1,000 per day but it wasn’t enough and he became frustrated and stole the old chainsaw bar from a truck. He said that his intention was to sell the bar so that he could get money to go back home.

While no specifics were presented to the court, the prosecution stated that the man is known for stealing.

Magistrate Daly subsequently sentenced Sukhai to six months in jail.
