Teens charged with robbing sleeping concert goer

Two youths were remanded to prison yesterday after they were charged with stealing almost $500,000 in cash and other valuables from a patron who fell asleep at a concert.

Calvin Accra, 18, of Lot 345 Cummings Street, Alberttown and his 16-year-old co-accused pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

The duo allegedly stole a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone, a gold chain, $90,000 in cash and a car key from Ron Dereck, on August 8th, 2015, at the Providence National Stadium. The items were valued at $495,000.

The prosecution’s case is that Dereck, who was attending the Chronixx concert at the Providence National Stadium, fell asleep in one of the stands. The two accused subsequently relieved him of the cash, phone, and car keys. As the youths were removing his gold chain, Dereck woke and they fled. After about three minutes, Accra allegedly returned to the scene of the crime and returned the car key. A scuffle then ensued between the two but Accra managed to slip out of Dereck’s grasp and escaped.

On August 14th, Dereck spotted the two accused in the vicinity of Palm Court on Main Street and he alerted a nearby police patrol, which arrested them.

Objections were made to bail due to the seriousness and prevalence of the crime as well as the value of the items that were stolen. As a result, Magistrate Leron Daly remanded the teens to prison until September 7th, 2015, when the matter is to be called again.
