City to go after tax defaulters after amnesty

Once its impending amnesty on interest accumulated on owed property taxes is over, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) says it will take defaulters to court to clear outstanding debts.

In a statement issued yesterday, the M&CC urged the public to take advantage of the upcoming amnesty, which will run from September 1st to September 30th.

“This is so because the city’s keepers have every intention to take tax defaulters to court once that period is over and citizens fail to clear outstanding monies owed on properties,” it said. According to the statement, the M&CC is slashing the interest off taxes owed on residential properties by 100%, while commercial properties could see as much as 75% interest removed from arrears.

Town Clerk Royston King explained that citizens owing the council tax payments on their residence could have all the interest which would have accumulated removed, while owners of commercial properties will have to apply to his office for the 75% tax interest pardon. The application would then be forwarded to a specially convened interview panel, which would determine the interest waiver to be awarded.

The Council is also encouraging that all charitable and religious organisations apply for tax exemptions as is provided for in the law.

King said the amnesty would not be extended as the M&CC is in need of all funds to facilitate the city’s new “Clean and Green” drive.
