Repeat offender gets 56 months for violent robbery

Keon Simon, who had managed to evade imprisonment after several court appearances for charges of armed robbery, was yesterday sentenced to 56 months in jail.

Simon, 20, of 53 West La Penitence, Georgetown, was yesterday sentenced for a charge of armed robbery during which he used personal violence.

It was the police’s case that on June 13th, Simon robbed Marcia Rampersaud of two gold rings and a gold chain, carrying a total value of $60,000. The prosecutor, Simone Payne, had previously told the court that the items were recovered in Simon’s pocket after his arrest. Simon had later been positively identified during an identification parade.

When asked if would like to say anything to the court before the sentence was passed, Simon submitted that the prosecution had presented no substantial evidence against him.

However, Magistrate Judy Latchman, disagreed. After considering that the defendant had used violence and had been armed during the course of the robbery, the magistrate sentenced Simon to 56 months in jail.

In January, Simon appeared along with Akeem Marshall and Lionel Khudu before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and they were fined $75,000 each after being charged with the armed robbery of Anthony Rowley. The trio had been caught red-handed in Rowley’s home.

In February, Simon and Marshall again appeared before the court facing five counts of armed robbery. Simon eventually had the charges regarding at least two of the charges dismissed after Magistrate Latchman stated that the identification had not been believable and the evidence presented by the witnesses had not been sufficient enough to make a case against him.
