Rupununi farmer jailed for ganja on first try

A disorderly behaviour complaint against a Rupununi farmer has landed him in jail for three years after police ended up finding him with marijuana.

“The drug is mine. I does plant it but not nuff. I only plant like three to see if I can make some money,” Clifford Nathaniel, 25, told city magistrate Ann McLennan, after pleading guilty to possession of 18 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.

“This is the first time I try it,” he added.

The charge stated that on August 23rd, Nathaniel had the drug at Monkey Mountain, South Rupununi.

According to facts presented to the court by Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones, police had gone to the man’s home to arrest him after a complaint was made against him for disorderly behaviour.

However, at the police station, a search was conducted on Nathaniel that unearthed a quantity of leaves, stems and seeds contained in a transparent bag in his back pocket. The prosecutor further stated that after the drugs were shown to Nathaniel he acknowledged the substance as being his.

In addition to the three-year sentence, Nathaniel was also fined $30,000.
