Guyana to send rice to storm-hit Dominica

The Government of Guyana in conjunction with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) will donate a 20-foot container of rice to the Eastern Caribbean Island of Dominica.

A release today from the Ministry of the Presidency said that the donation comes at a time when Dominica is still in distress mode after the recent passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

Minister of State with responsibility for Disaster Preparedness Management Joseph Harmon made the announcement today during a CDC workshop. He said that Guyana’s response is based on a “correct needs analysis of what is currently required in the Tropical Storm ravaged country”. He lamented that there are many countries which when faced with similar natural disasters receive items from their Caribbean counterparts that are “useless”. He said that within a few days the Civil Defence Commission will make the necessary arrangements and put logistics in place for that container of rice to be delivered to the people of Dominica.
