Soldier charged over Regent St hold-up

A soldier was one of two men who appeared before a city court yesterday accused of sticking a man up and robbing him of $111,000 worth of items.

The accused, Anthony Ralph, 26, of 111 Friendship, East Coast Demerara, and Corwayne Wright, 24, of 83 Duke Street Kingston, allegedly robbed Anewell Park in the wee hours of September 5, at Regent Street, Bourda.

Ralph, a soldier, and Wright, a labourer, who were reportedly armed with an icepick, are accused of robbing Park of a Samsung Galaxy S5, a wallet, a haversack, a Phillips earpiece and $11,000. The robbery was said to have occurred around 1.30 am.

The accused, who were unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones informed the court that the victim, Park, had been stabbed during the course of the robbery. Jones also stated that the defendants had been positively identified by Park, who had pointed them out to policemen on patrol. After investigations were carried out, all of the stolen items were recovered.

Jones objected to bail for the defendants, while citing the gravity of the charge and the penalty such a charge attracts.

Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently ordered Ralph and Wright to be remanded to prison until their next court appearance, which will be September 11 in Court 10.
