“Jobs for our young men and women must be our top priority over the next five years”, President David Granger told the PNCR’s third general council meeting for the year today and the first since APNU+AFC won the presidency in May.
Granger, who is also the leader of the PNCR and APNU said “I see this as an opportunity, not a victory”, a release from the PNCR said.
Granger said that the coalition victory was an opportunity to implement the promises that the PNCR has been making to the people of Guyana. “It is an opportunity to serve”, he asserted.
The PNCR Leader called on the General Council of the Party to work to achieve several goals including equality for women. “Over the next five years we must work to make women equality a reality.” He added that the country could not move forward unless social cohesion was achieved. “This country must be one nation, one people, if we are to achieve our full potential we have to become more socially cohesive”, he declared.
On youth unemployment, the release quoted Granger as saying “jobs for our young men and women must be our top priority over the next five years.” He added that a big problem facing the nation was the high drop-out rate. “A big problem in Guyana is keeping children in school; we must do everything possible to give all of our children access to education.”
The PNCR Leader restated his promise of one lap top per teacher, and called for more emphasis on Information Technology. He said, “… we have to train a generation that is committed to innovation… a generation of entrepreneurs and manufacturers.”
Party Chairman, Basil Williams in his welcome and introductory remarks said that, “after 23 years there is a new President; a PNCR President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.” He also thanked Party members for their hard work, steadfastness, sacrifice and for staying the course and working in partnership (APNU+ AFC) to secure a victory for the people of Guyana at the May 2015 polls, the release added. The Party Chairman, also the Attorney General, however, warned that, “… we cannot rest on our laurels; we must set about to work to secure a good life for all Guyanese.”
