Paralysed accident victim at GPH has nowhere to go

Ragesh Ragbeer is calling on the public for assistance after being left paralysed from the waist down following an accident some five months ago. He is still hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) with nowhere to go despite having been discharged.

Ragbeer, 31, had previously told this newspaper on May 17, that he had just disembarked from the Route 40 bus on which he worked as a conductor, and was crossing the road to purchase a snack when “out of nowhere the car come and knock me down.” He had related at that time, “All I remember is he [the driver] saying he not responsible for me and if he carry me to the hospital the police will lock he up.” Ragbeer said the driver of the bus he worked on and public-spirited citizens rendered assistance and took him to the hospital. He sustained severe spinal damage and several fractured bones about his body.

He was discharged in July and was being cared for by an elderly caretaker who was forced to take him back to the hospital because of her physical inability to afford the level of care she wanted.

Today, Ragbeer lies in his bed in the Male Medical Ward of the GPH where he pleads with everyone who comes his way for assistance just to get out of the hospital. Although he is fully aware that he is paralysed from the waist down he is eager to get out of bed and even be placed on a wheelchair once every day.

“Even if somebody can come and take me to a home or something, I would be glad because I fed up lay down here; sometime I does say is best I dead and done”, said the distressed Ragbeer. In addition to the physical injuries he sustained as a consequence of the accident, he also suffers from memory loss which causes him to be unable to remember the contact numbers or even the locations where his family members, including his siblings, live.

“All I does live on is a bottle of water many days, because I ain’t got nobody to visit me”, he said; “I even ask the nurses here to see if they can get me a wheelchair so I can move about and do something for myself, but up to now I never get anything.”

Anyone who wishes to make contact with Ragbeer to render any assistance can do so at the GPH Male Surgical Ward Room 3.
