Rohan Persaud, who claimed he found his friend dead outside of his yard, was yesterday charged with the man’s murder.
Persaud, 37, called ‘Mango,’ of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was arraigned at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for the murder of mechanic Ganesh Permaul, who was found dead on September 17th.
He was not required to plead to the charge after it was read to him by sitting Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh.
Persaud, a father of three and an auto body works specialist, was unrepresented during his arraignment and seemed unaware of his surroundings Police Prosecutor Inspector Godfrey Playter requested that the next court date be scheduled in two weeks since the police were seeking advice on the case. The request was granted and Persaud was remanded to prison until October 12th, when the case is to be called for a report.
An autopsy revealed that Permaul died as a result of asphyxiation.
Permaul, 29, of Lot 32 Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was found dead by Persaud, who said he discovered the body after returning home. Family members said they were told that he was beaten to death.
However, Persaud reportedly told investigators that before leaving home he saw Permaul on his veranda and he appeared to be okay. The two men had been drinking together previously.
