GuySuCo worker dies in Albion crash

A Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) employee lost his life on the Albion public road on Monday night whilst he was on his way home from work.

Devon Deene, 23, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, reports said, was proceeding west on the public road along with minibus PHH 3410. Stabroek News understands that the driver of the minibus was in the process of turning into a street when Deene tried to overtake the vehicle. The two collided which resulted in Deene crashing into a utility pole, a resident from the area said. It was further related that the driver of the minibus chose to alert officers at the Albion Police Station about the crash before attempting to offer assistance to the injured man.

Deene was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital and then to the New Amsterdam hospital and finally the Georgetown Public Hospital where he subsequently succumbed.

His sister, Kenisha Deene said that after the incident occurred they were informed via a phone call. She and other family members rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where her brother was admitted for medical attention for two and a half hours.

A decision was taken to transfer him to New Amsterdam Hospital, she said, but they experienced transportation difficulties. She said the hospital ambulance is equipped with a “run down battery” and when the driver of the minibus offered to jump start the ambulance, its driver, whom she identified as Rampersaud reportedly refused the help, picked up his bicycle and rode out of the compound. She is calling on the relevant authorities to look in to the issue.

However, assistance came from Albion estate and that ambulance was used to transfer the injured man. At the New Amsterdam Hospital he received oxygen and saline and an x-ray was done, she said adding that around 3 am yesterday her brother was transferred to the GPH where he was placed on the life support machine but later succumbed.

She said that her brother sustained severe head injuries, but might have lived if he had received quality health care. She stated that doctors at the GPH told family members there was nothing they could have done as he had arrived too late.
