Guyana to host EU-sponsored conference on abolishing death penalty in Caribbean

The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Guyana is organising a regional conference on the abolition of the death penalty in the Caribbean, which is to be held in Guyana from November 23rd to November 24th.

The announcement was made yesterday by the EU Delegation ahead of today’s observation of World Day against the Death Penalty.

According to a statement issued by the EU Delegation, the conference will be held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and it will see participation by Michèle Duvivier Pierre-Louis, former Prime Minister of Haiti and Commissioner for the International Commission against the Death Penalty; Asunta Vivó Cavaller, Secretary-General of the International Commission against the Death Penalty; Ruth Wijdenbosch, former Deputy Chair of the National Assembly of Suriname; Lord Navnit Dholakia, UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Abolition of the Death Penalty; and representatives from civil society from many Caribbean countries.

The statement added that the conference shall consist of keynote speeches and a number of discussion panels on aspects of abolition of the death penalty. It is to also consider the various compelling reasons for the abolition of the death penalty, including the risk of executing innocent people, the incompatibility of the punishment with human rights and human dignity and its ineffectiveness in deterring crime.
