Bandits beat, rob West Berbice family

A family was harassed and robbed of about $6 million in cash and jewellery after two bandits invaded their house last night through a window by removing two louvre window panes.

According to a police press release, around 1.30 am yesterday Umgrie Parmanand, 55, of Bath, West Coast Berbice was awakened by the sound of persons in his home. Two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm had entered the home through an open window. They held up Parmanand, his wife, Chandroutie, 52, and their son Latchman Parmanand, 26, during which Latchman was shot to his left foot. Latchman was subsequently rushed to the hospital.

“I was in me bed sleeping and I hear all the commotion going on and so I go outside and I hear they beating them [his parents] in the room and demanding cash,” Latchman explained to Stabroek News.

Latchman said he went into the room and tried to intervene and was shot to his leg. “After they shoot me I seh well I already get shoot just tek wah yall want and go and nobody else gon get hurt,” he said, stating that the two men took the cash and jewellery and escaped.

Latchman has since been discharged from the hospital and is at home recovering.

He said the two men were able to gain access to the house after they jumped onto a shed on the eastern side of the house and removed several louvre window panes.

“They beat them [his parents] you know. They beat them bad and this is the first time that this ever happened to us,” Latchman said, explaining that the two men beat his parents about their bodies and to their heads. “They beat mommy bad in she head and black she out and they were beating my father and they didn’t want to stop. Is until I go in then everything ease down,” he added, pointing out that the two men’s faces were tied with rags and he was unable to recognize them.

Latchman confirmed that the men escaped with about $6 million in cash and valuables and that his parents were still receiving medical attention at the Mahaicony Hospital.
